when last we left our writer…

Okay, so it’s currently a quarter to midnight, and I have to get up early in the morning to ride a horse. No, that’s not a euphemism. You sickos.

Anyway, before I sleep, I want to say a brief thing about my WIPs.

A BRIEF THING ABOUT MY WIPS:

  • Author extraordinaire and all-around good human Bernard Schaffer has invited me to submit a story for the first issue of his new magazine, Maximum Thrill! I’m reworking two stories that I think would fit: “Family Matters” (~2,000 words) and “Legend of the Lost and Found” (~6,000 words). I’ve asked Bernard whether he wants a longer one or a shorter one, so I’ll submit his preference as soon as I hear back from him.
  • I am sitting on 4 (FOUR!) novel-length Light-Walker pieces that desperately need attention so they can go out into the world. They are:

THE FLIGHT OF ELFLED unBLESSED: needs final draft before going out to beta readers

THE PRIESTESS MURDERS: needs final edits, cover art, cover copy

RETURN OF THE PELEGRIN: needs 3rd draft edits before going out to betas

MALEFACTORS AND OTHER BLOODLINES OF THE LIGHT-WALKERS: needs feedback from betas

Yeah, I know. That last title’s a brainful. It is what it is, for now. Verbal feedback from betas on MALEFACTORS has not been great. It’s been demoralizing, actually. I’ll be an adult about it and do my job, but I’m not looking forward to the massive rewrites I suspect this book has in store for me.

So there thou hast it. I have my work cut out for me, and for the first time in a while, I actually feel equal to it (MALEFACTORS notwithstanding!).

Front cover of a novel. Title and author's name in white font with serifs, all CAPS. Title: The Priestess Murders. Author: Courtney Cantrell. The image depicts a gnarled tree reaching from the bottom left corner up the left side and across the top half of the image. The tree is silhouetted against a star-spangled, dark blue night sky. In the background (lower third of image) are leafy, densely growing trees dimly lit by what might be moonlight (light source not shown). In the center of the image is a honeybee viewed from above. The bee glows a pale gold and is surrounded by a nimbus if pale gold light. The bee also exudes rays of pale gold light reaching up and down and left and right. A gash is torn in the bee's thorax, and red blood trickles from the wound. Novel published October 2025.
